Standards Overview

IEC 60446 / ČSN 33 0165 (current)

Valid in EU since 2004. Czech installations must follow this standard. Key change: old black phase → brown/black/grey for L1/L2/L3. Green-yellow for PE has been mandatory throughout.

Old ČSN / DIN (pre-2004)

Still encountered in older Czech and German installations. Phase was often black or red, neutral light blue. Do not mix old and new color coding in the same installation — always label and verify with a tester.

US NEC (National Electrical Code)

Standard for North America. Hot = Black (or Red for second phase), Neutral = White/Grey, Ground = Green or bare. 3-phase uses Black/Red/Blue for phases L1/L2/L3.

Safety warning

Never assume wire function from color alone. Always verify with a multimeter or voltage tester, especially in older installations or when working with unknown wiring. Incorrect assumptions can be fatal.

ČSN vs. IEC — Key changes after 2004

What changed

  • Phase L1: Black → Brown
  • Phase L2: new Black (was shared with L1)
  • Phase L3: new Grey
  • Neutral: unchanged — Blue
  • PE: unchanged — Green-Yellow
  • Red was previously common for phase in CZ/SK

What stayed the same

  • Green-Yellow exclusively for PE (protective earth) — never use for any other purpose
  • Blue for neutral — was already the standard
  • PEN conductor: Green-Yellow with Blue end markers
  • Single-phase: Brown (L) + Blue (N) + Green-Yellow (PE)
