Project Description

This universal storage box is designed to organize small parts, components, and tools in workshops, garages, or hobby spaces. The modular design allows for easy stacking and efficient use of shelf space.

The box features reinforced corners for durability and a snap-fit lid that keeps contents secure while remaining easy to open. Multiple sizes can be printed to accommodate different storage needs.

Build Process

Prepare 3D Model

Download the STL files from Printables and import them into your slicer software (PrusaSlicer, Cura, etc.). Orient the parts for optimal printing with minimal supports.

Slice and Print

Set layer height to 0.2 mm, infill to 20%, and use supports only where necessary. Print time: approximately 6 hours for the base and 2 hours for the lid.

Post-Processing

Remove supports carefully, clean up any stringing with a hobby knife, and test the lid fit. Sand edges if needed for a smoother finish.

Learned Lessons

💡 Optimize Print Orientation

Printing the box upright resulted in better layer adhesion and smoother walls. The lid should be printed upside down to avoid supports on the inner surface.

💡 Infill Strategy

20% infill provided sufficient strength while keeping print time reasonable. Gyroid infill pattern distributed stress better than grid pattern.

Problems & Solutions

⚠️ Lid Too Tight

The initial design resulted in a lid that was extremely difficult to remove, requiring excessive force that risked breaking the box.

✅ Solution

Scaled the lid to 100.5% in XY axes (horizontal plane only) in the slicer. This provided just enough clearance for smooth operation while maintaining a secure fit.

⚠️ Warping Corners

Corners of the base lifted during printing, causing dimensional inaccuracy and poor bed adhesion.

✅ Solution

Enabled brim (5 mm width) and increased bed temperature to 65 °C for PLA. Also cleaned the print bed thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol before each print.
